WELCOME to the Official Blog of the 2012 National Amateur, June 17-23, held this year in Onaway, Michigan. This year's Blog is brought to you by the Retriever News and sponsored by Purina, Avery, Dogs Afield and Ainley. We hope you enjoy these multi-daily updates and please come back often!

This year we encourage visitors to participate in the National Amateur discussion located in the comments section of each post. These areas are a great outlet for remote communication and commentary for those unable to attend this year's NARC. Also, please keep an eye out for trivia, surveys and other interactive activities!

The Retriever News team consists of three members, Tina Styan, Mark Koenig and Gwen Jones. Please don't hesitate to share any items of interest or photos that you think the retriever community might be interested in. Send submissions to Tina Styan at:

8th Series - Land Blind

The line for the blind has been moved to the left, down the ridge from the 7th Series line. The blind is set on the side of a ridge with the line taking them over a first mound, down into a draw, over a second mound, out into a field over a man-made brush pile. They proceed from the brush pile up through a small hedge row into an open field beyond. The challenge is falling off the mounds since everything slants left and the brush pile forces you left or right.

Test dog 1, FC Ranger's Black Bart, LM, Marsha McGee, fell off the second mound, smelled around the brush pile then on to complete the blind.

Test dog 2, MS Micro Doodle Dandy, LF, Tom Bogusky, slipped off the down side of both mounds and went through the brush pile to complete the blind.

TEST 8 UNDER WAY AT 6:33 PM...

Thank You Landowners!

The property that we are holding Test 7 at is called the Buffalo Ranch and owned by Roger and Pat Magnusson, and Bruce and Monica Magnusson and Ray and Lou Vreeland. Bruce has sled dogs and from time to time you can hear a whole group of dogs howling in the distance. The valley that this test is being held in is reminiscent of a wild west movie where they would herd wild horses, cattle or buffalo into...minus the cactus and Clint Eastwood. Thank you to the Magnusson's and Vreeland's for sharing this remarkable property with all of us. Thank you!

Behind the line...

Brenda Little hats are the accessory of the day.

These dogs are consistently mis-marking the flyer...

After asking for the opinion of several experienced handlers, we found that the wind is blowing deep and a little left of the gunners. They are shooting a pheasant at 320 yards but the scent is holding back behind the gunners where the wind is swirling. They just aren't getting a good look and are being held closer to the guns by the scent.

98. AFC CANDLEWOODS COMMANDER AND CHIEF, LM, Fred Kampo

88. SON OF A PREACHER MAN, LM, Duncan Christie

80. FC-AFC HENNINGER'S SLICK N READY, LM, Mark Medford

...had a small hunt on the flyer, did a very nice job. Going for bird 1 he took a good line with a small loop at the end coming up with the bird. Bird 2, he had a hunt from the holding blind deep then over to the right and hunted his way back down to the bird. Bird 3, he got deep, back into the flyer area and had to be handled to the bird.
